Why is it complex?

Damp-proofing heritage buildings is not the same as damp-proofing an ordinary building.

Damp in historic masonry means water, salts, and an altered material structure all at once. The National Heritage Institute and local heritage authorities set their conditions uncompromisingly to protect the original elements, shapes, and characteristic features of the building. Many common damp-proofing methods (chemical injection, undercutting, membranes, conventional renovating plasters) permanently damage historic masonry. Our solution prevents this.

What heritage damp-proofing must address

Salt diagnosis

Sulphates, chlorides, and nitrates behave differently. Chlorides and nitrates are hygroscopic — they draw moisture directly from the air, meaning the masonry remains "wet" even after the source has been removed. We measure salt content using the carbide method and propose a procedure based on the results.

Reversibility of the intervention

Both the Venice Charter and National Heritage Institute methodologies require that the techniques used can be removed in the future without damaging the original fabric. WetBRICK® gel, injected into 18mm holes at the base of the wall, meets this rule — the holes can be made good, the structure remains untouched, and the material does not affect the visible fabric.

Masonry breathability

Historic masonry must "breathe". Membranes, damp-proof courses, and modern cement plasters disrupt this balance. Epasit® renovating plaster, with its high porosity, allows water to escape while trapping salts inside — making it compatible with both lime plasters and stone masonry.

Cooperation with authorities

For every heritage project, we prepare complete documentation: the technological procedure, material data sheets, safety data sheets, a proposed drilling layout, and photographic documentation of test probes. We submit this to the National Heritage Institute, the local heritage authority, or the municipal authority with extended powers. Work is carried out only after consent has been issued.

The approval process — how it typically works

  2. 02A proposed damp-proofing procedure compatible with the character of the building.
  3. 03Preparation of documentation for the heritage authorities (3–5 working days).
  4. 04Submission and liaison with the National Heritage Institute / heritage conservation department (typically 4–12 weeks).
  5. 05Implementation once consent has been issued, followed by final reports and photographic documentation for the archive.
